General description of the collection: The Frederick Mears photograph collection consists of photos that show some of his father, his family, and relatives; time spent at Fort Leavenworth (1906); a few of activities in France in 1918 with the 31st Engineer Regiment, (AEF); and personalities involved in the building of the Great Northern Railroad, (1928-1937). The Alaska railroad project is the most prolific of the collection.

Frederick Mears was a United States (U.S.) Army engineer. He was a graduate of the Shattuck Military School in Faribault, Minnesota. He enlisted in the Army in 1899 and was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant in 1901. He followed his father in a military career and was assigned to the cavalry branch, but spent much of his career as an army engineer.
